Waste Land
Oscar nominated documentary (UK/Brazil 2010) about turning rubbish into art and thus giving hope to people who live in difficult conditions. Presenting the scenario of the world’s largest garbage dump (Jardim Gramacho) with their workers in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, Vik Muniz creates a fantastic series of portraits called ‘Pictures of Garbage”. It is an unusual interaction with the self – designated pickers of recyclable materials, showing to everyone another view of the rubbish.
As part of the project, one of his pictures called Marat (First below) was sold in an auction in London and all the profits were used to help the people who work on the dump.
